1. Ball Python Enclosure Size
- Minimum for adults: 4x2x2 ft (48"x24"x24") — approximately 120 gallons
- PVC enclosures are preferred over glass for superior humidity retention
- 40-gallon tanks are severely undersized for adults and cause chronic stress
- Juveniles can start in smaller enclosures but must be upgraded as they grow

⚠️ Safety Warning
Never use heat mats as a primary heat source. They only heat the floor and cannot warm ambient air to the required 88-92°F. Every heat source MUST be connected to a thermostat.
- Primary heat: Halogen PAR38 flood bulb or Arcadia Deep Heat Projector
- Warm hide target: 90-95°F — place thermostat probe inside warm hide
- Warm side ambient: 88-92°F | Cool side: 75-80°F | Night minimum: 72°F
- Thermostat probe placement is critical — inside the warm hide at snake level

- Maintain 60-80% ambient humidity at all times
- Humid hide lined with damp sphagnum moss — 80-100% inside
- Use 4" minimum substrate depth to retain moisture naturally
- Low humidity causes dysecdysis (stuck shed) which can injure eyes and tail
- Monitor with a digital hygrometer placed in the middle of the enclosure
4. Ball Python Substrate
- Best mix: 40% organic topsoil + 40% Zoo Med ReptiSoil + 20% play sand
- Minimum 4 inch depth for humidity retention and natural burrowing
- Cypress mulch and coconut fiber are good single-substrate alternatives
- Safe as-is: paper towels for quarantine or hatchlings only
- Never use: cedar, pine, calcium sand, reptile carpet, or wood chips
5. Hides & Enrichment
- 3 hides required: warm hide (90-95°F), cool hide, and humid hide
- Hides must be snug — snake should feel walls touching its body
- Humid hide lined with damp sphagnum moss, replace monthly
- Large soaking water bowl — snake must be able to fully coil inside
- Ball pythons are semi-arboreal — cork logs and climbing branches are used
